New government passport return service for EU nationals applying for permanent residence

The surge in EU and EEA nationals living and working in the UK applying for a permanent residence certificate has led to long delays for consideration of their applications. For those EU and EEA nationals who do not have identity cards, such as the Danes, this meant surrendering their passports to the UK authorities for up to 8 months.

Participating local authorities are soon going to be offering a passport return service for EU and EEA and Swiss nationals applying online whereby the applicant can present with his/her passport to be photocopied and forwarded to the Home Office with the application. This is a relief to EU and EEA nationals whose travel would otherwise be restricted during the time it takes for the Home Office to process an application.
